India's Gukesh Dommaraju has secured his maiden victory in the world chess championship against China's Ding Liren, after the 32-year-old reigning champion suffered a stunning defeat due to time mismanagement in the third game of their $2.5m showdown in Singapore.
Ding's oversight with the clock left him with just 10 seconds to execute five moves, a critical error that occurred while he was already in a losing position. This victory marks Gukesh's first triumph over Ding in their six classical encounters. Prior to Wednesday's match, Ding held a 4-1 advantage in their head-to-head record, with three wins and two draws since January 2023.
Both competitors will now anticipate Thursday's rest day before the competition resumes on Friday, with Ding set to play as white in game nine. A comprehensive report will follow.
