A gunman was killed and three policemen were injured following a shooting incident near the Israeli embassy in neighboring Jordan, according to a security source and state media reports on Sunday.
State news agency Petra reported that police shot a gunman who had opened fire on a police patrol in the Rabiah neighborhood of Amman, citing the public security department. The report added that investigations into the incident were ongoing.
Jordan's government communications minister, Mohamed Momani, characterized the shooting as a terror attack aimed at the country's public security forces. In a statement, he confirmed that investigations into the attack were in progress.
Earlier, Jordanian police had sealed off an area near the heavily guarded embassy after gunshots were reported, according to witnesses. Two witnesses mentioned that police and ambulances quickly arrived at the Rabiah neighborhood, where the embassy is situated.
A security source revealed that police had advised residents to remain indoors as security personnel conducted a search for the perpetrators.
