Nintendo's recently launched Alarmo was initially designed to be a costly digital alarm clock featuring themes and graphics from well-known Nintendo Switch games. However, some highly skilled hackers are set on transforming Alarmo into a device capable of much more. Just a few weeks after its release, a playable version of Doom has been successfully installed on Alarmo, complete with video evidence of the feat.
The hacker responsible is GaryOderNichts, who previously managed to display cat images on Alarmo. GaryOderNichts detailed how to extract the firmware file from Alarmo, enabling users to upload customized code via USB. For this latest hack, he acknowledged X user Spinda for 'figuring out the Alarmo SWD pads,' and noted that Spinda was also 'the first to dump the eMMC contents.'
While Doom is now playable on Alarmo, there are limitations. The clock buttons are not ideal for gaming, and sound support is currently absent from the Doom hack. Nonetheless, it has been demonstrated that Alarmo can be adapted to play games, potentially paving the way for similar hacks unless Nintendo takes steps to prevent this.
Alarmo is currently available through Nintendo stores and for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. A broader release is expected sometime in 2025.
