India's captain Harmanpreet Singh scored a late goal for the second consecutive game, securing a 1-1 draw against Argentina in Pool B of the men's hockey at the Paris Olympics on Monday. Known for his dragflick expertise, Harmanpreet had previously scored a decisive goal against New Zealand and repeated his heroics in the closing minutes of India's second match, equalizing after Lucas Martinez had given Argentina the lead in the 22nd minute.
"I believe we create numerous opportunities, entering the circle and obtaining some excellent chances, but our finishing was lacking today," Harmanpreet commented. "For our next match, we must remember to capitalize fully on any opportunity that arises." Belgium and Australia lead Pool B following Australia's 2-1 victory over Ireland. India ranks third with four points, while Argentina is in fourth place with only one point. The top four teams from each pool advance to the quarterfinals.
In the women's competition, the United States managed a tough 1-1 draw with Spain, earning their first point of the Games. Spain launched 19 shots, with the United Eagles making two crucial clearances from the goal line after the ball had evaded goalkeeper Kelsey Bing. "It was a mix of luck and bravery that the ball found my stick," said US co-captain Ashley Hoffman regarding one of the clearances. "I would have preferred to leave with three points, but one point is better than none." Spain leads Pool B with four points, ahead of Argentina and Australia, who are set to play their second games against South Africa and Britain respectively later on Monday.
In an earlier women's match, China dominated Japan with a 5-0 victory, earning their first points in Pool A after a disheartening late defeat to Belgium on Sunday.
