Heavy fog caused significant disruptions to numerous flights on Thursday at Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport, a major African air transport hub. Ethiopian Airlines reported that from approximately 3 am (0000 GMT), due to "extremely foggy weather," most incoming flights were unable to land at Bole and were redirected to alternative airports. The airline also stated that both domestic and international outgoing flights were impacted, as announced on X. "We are implementing all necessary measures to alleviate the impact on our passengers' travel plans," they added. Bole, the central hub for Ethiopian Airlines, is capable of accommodating up to 25 million passengers annually. Earlier this month, the airport approved the design for a new $6 billion facility, which is set to become the largest in Africa. Located in Bishoftu, southeast of Addis Ababa, the new airport will have a capacity of 100 million passengers per year upon completion in five years, according to the airline.
