If you're planning to create a film about a colossal robot, securing a man of steel to headline it is a savvy move. This is precisely what Rawson Marshall Thurber has accomplished with the latest casting announcement for his forthcoming live-action Voltron movie. As reported by Deadline, former Superman and renowned geek IP magnet Henry Cavill has secured the lead role in Thurber's film, which is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios.

After numerous unsuccessful attempts to bring the mecha anime sensation to the big screen (dating back to 2008, when we first reported on efforts to launch a cinematic adaptation), Thurber, director of Red Notice, ignited a bidding war in 2022 with an original pitch and teaser reel that caught the attention of Hollywood's elite. Although the specifics of that pitch remain closely guarded for now, Amazon swiftly secured the project, which will introduce the Robot Lions—five pilots whose vehicles combine, akin to Megazord, to form the formidable Voltron—to live-action for the first time.

For those unfamiliar with the anime, which was a massive hit during its 80s prime, envision a blend of Transformers, Power Rangers, and a hint of Pacific Rim, and you'll get the idea. Cavill joins previously announced newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye in the cast, with Thurber co-writing the script alongside Ellen Shanman. While no release date has been set, THR reports that filming is scheduled to commence in Australia this fall. With Cavill recently appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine, preparing to shoot Chad Stahelski's Highlander reboot next year, and now joining this high-budget robot blockbuster, there's no better time to become a Cavill fan.
