Applications for the MSc in Computer Science are now being accepted, with classes commencing in May 2025.
Heriot-Watt University has unveiled its inaugural fully online master’s degree in computer science, in partnership with the global online learning giant, Coursera, which boasts 150 million users. This marks the first time a UK university has offered an MSc in computer science on this platform. The fully online program is designed to meet the urgent need for tech skills in the global job market. According to Lightcast, a labor analytics platform, computer science skills are sought after in 18% of global job postings but are only listed in 3% of candidate profiles, underscoring a significant talent gap.
Applications for the MSc in Computer Science are now being accepted, with classes starting in May 2025. The curriculum is meticulously aligned with employer requirements, focusing on in-demand skills such as programming, machine learning, data mining, data structures, and artificial intelligence. Students will also earn an industry certificate from tech leaders like Google, IBM, and Meta. Professor Sara Lombardo, Executive Dean of the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, emphasized the university’s commitment to innovation in computer science education.
In a tech-driven world, there is an urgent need for highly skilled computer science graduates. “Our curriculum combines our academic excellence with industry credentials from top employers, ensuring students gain the knowledge and practical skills necessary to capitalize on the growing opportunities in this field,” said Professor Lombardo.
Salaries in the sector are projected to rise as demand for computer scientists grows by 22%, with UK graduates typically starting at around £44,000. Students can complete their studies at their own pace, allowing them to acquire in-demand skills while managing their careers and other commitments. Dr. Abrar Ullah, the program director, highlighted the flexibility of the online MSc in Computer Science, designed to meet both learner and industry needs.
The performance-based admissions criteria enable learners without a formal ICT background to pursue careers such as web developer, software developer, data scientist, and IT manager. Russell Brooks, CEO of Heriot-Watt Online, noted the university’s pioneering role in flexible, career-focused education.
Coursera, launched in 2012 by Stanford Computer Science professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller, aims to provide universal access to world-class learning. With 150 million registered learners, it partners with over 325 leading institutions to offer a diverse range of content and credentials. Marni Baker Stein, Coursera’s Chief Content Officer, emphasized the partnership’s potential to equip students worldwide with the tools needed for success.
