Apart from its large wheels, this Mk2 Volkswagen Golf may not seem particularly impressive. However, it conceals a tremendously powerful all-wheel drive powertrain that can rival most supercars. Crafted and raced by Kim Paetz, this Golf features a 2.9-liter VR6 engine from a later Volkswagen model, extensively modified to handle the boost from a BorgWarner EFR 9180 turbocharger. Engine Swap Depot reports that this setup generates 898 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque. All this power is transmitted to the wheels through a five-speed sequential transmission and a contemporary 4Motion VW all-wheel drive system. The VeeDubRacing YouTube channel captured footage of Paetz's car at the L8Night quarter-mile event last month, held at Lausitzring near Berlin. The video showcases several quarter-mile runs, including impressive four-wheel burnouts. Among the runs, Paetz achieved a top time of 10.07 seconds at 148.7 mph. Although this performance cannot compete with modern supercars like the Rimac Nevera or Porsche 911 Turbo S, it remains exceptionally fast. It's even more remarkable considering the car's boxy aerodynamic shape and initial traction issues. With an improved launch, this car could potentially reach the 9-second range.
