In addition to the PlayStation-exclusive Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Hideo Kojima's Kojima Productions is venturing into the Xbox-exclusive OD. In a recent interview, the renowned game designer divulged a small detail about OD, describing it as "risky." He told Variety that he wanted to work on a project outside the Death Stranding series, leading him to collaborate with Microsoft for OD. "This is a game, yet it's a game unlike any other. I can't reveal too much, and it's challenging to explain," he said. "But it's somewhat risky and a fresh challenge for me within the gaming sphere."

Kojima is partnering with Oscar-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele for OD. After meeting Peele in Los Angeles and discussing the concept, Kojima extended an invitation for Peele to join the project. "He was genuinely intrigued, so I asked him to collaborate," Kojima recounted.

Kojima's circle includes many acclaimed filmmakers, such as Peele, Nicolas Winding Refn, Guillermo del Toro, and others. He noted that some of his filmmaker friends are keen to enter the gaming industry but lack the know-how, which is how his partnership with Peele materialized. "People in the film or music industry adore games because they grew up with them, and I was quite surprised by that. They might be busy filming movies, but they actually love games. I know individuals who are late to their shoots because they were engrossed in games at home," Kojima shared.

He added: "So, I encourage those people, 'Then you should create games!' But they all respond, 'I'd love to, but I don't know how,' and claim they can't do it. So, I thought, why not do it together? And that's how I ended up partnering with Jordan Peele to co-create a game."

Upon the announcement of OD, Peele described it as "unlike any other game; it's going to be wild." The game will showcase performances by actors Hunter Schafer, Sophia Lillis, and Udo Kier.

Kojima Productions is harnessing Microsoft's cloud gaming technology to craft an "immersive" game that Kojima claims is unprecedented. "It is a game, yet simultaneously a movie," Kojima explained through a translator.

The official description for OD reads: "A Hideo Kojima game, OD delves into the concept of testing your fear threshold, and what it means to OD on fear—while merging the realms of gaming and film."

Alongside Death Stranding 2 and OD, Kojima Productions is developing an espionage game titled Physint. Beyond games, Kojima is also working on a Death Stranding film with A24.

Kojima will elaborate more on Death Stranding 2 at the Tokyo Game Show this weekend on September 29. Stay tuned to GameSpot for further updates.
