Apart from its large wheels, this Mk2 Volkswagen Golf may not appear particularly impressive. However, it conceals a highly potent all-wheel drive powertrain capable of rivaling most supercars. Constructed and raced by Kim Paetz, this Golf is equipped with a 2.9-liter VR6 engine from a later Volkswagen model, extensively modified to handle the boost from a BorgWarner EFR 9180 turbocharger. Engine Swap Depot reports that this setup generates 898 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque. This power is transmitted to the wheels through a five-speed sequential transmission and a contemporary 4Motion VW all-wheel drive system. The VeeDubRacing YouTube channel captured footage of Paetz's car at the L8Night quarter-mile event held last month at Lausitzring, near Berlin. The video showcases several quarter-mile runs, including impressive four-wheel burnouts. Among the runs, Paetz achieved a top time of 10.07 seconds at 148.7 mph. Although this performance does not match the speeds of modern supercars like the Rimac Nevera or Porsche 911 Turbo S, it remains remarkably fast. It becomes even more remarkable when considering the car's boxy aerodynamic shape and its difficulty in gaining traction initially. With an improved launch, it's likely this car could reach the 9-second range.
