After the immense success of Hogwarts Legacy, which topped 2023's US sales charts and sold over 30 million copies worldwide, Warner Bros. Games is gearing up for a sequel. Fresh insights into the game and WBIE's broader gaming strategy have recently surfaced.
David Haddad, president of WB Games, revealed to Variety that Hogwarts Legacy 2, or whatever it ends up being called, might have some connection to the forthcoming Harry Potter TV series. The specifics of this connection remain unclear, especially since Hogwarts Legacy is set in the 1890s, while the TV series is expected to retell the Harry Potter books, which are set in the 1990s.
Regardless, Haddad noted, "We've long known that fans crave more from this universe, and we're dedicating significant time to exploring that." He further added, "Our research shows that age doesn't significantly differentiate fans; they're all deeply invested Harry Potter enthusiasts. We aim to create genuine experiences that resonate with them."
The executive also mentioned that Hogwarts Legacy's colossal success bolstered the company's confidence in continuing to invest in the Harry Potter franchise. "The rest of the company was keenly interested in what we achieved with Hogwarts Legacy last year," he said.
Hogwarts Legacy's success was so substantial that it surpassed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III in US sales for 2023. Additionally, Warner Bros. Discovery boss Robert Oberschelp clarified J.K. Rowling's role in the franchise's future. While she isn't directly involved, her agent keeps her informed if WBD's teams wish to venture beyond the established canon. Rowling's views on the trans community continue to cast a shadow over the series.
Besides Hogwarts Legacy 2, Warner Bros. is reportedly working on a Hogwarts Legacy Definitive Edition, featuring extra story content. The original Hogwarts Legacy omitted Quidditch matches, but a standalone Quidditch game, Quidditch Champions, was released in September.
The Harry Potter movie series was a blockbuster in the early 2000s, leading to attempts to spin it off with Fantastic Beasts. After three films, the series went on hiatus, with star Jude Law suggesting it might be over. Meanwhile, the TV series is in development for Max, with casting underway for the main roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
