The official commencement of the $500,000 HSBC India Legends Championship at Jaypee Greens in Delhi has arrived, featuring 54 holes and a field of 64 professional golfers alongside 16 amateurs. My initial days as the host have been both hectic and fulfilling, despite feeling somewhat fatigued due to the damp course conditions. I am aware of the commitments I've undertaken and have managed to fulfill most of my media obligations and hosted the Welcome Dinner and prize presentations for the Pro-Ams. Today's Pro-Am was particularly noteworthy as I played with Ryan Howson, the Legends Tour's head, marking my debut on the Jaypee Greens course designed by Greg Norman, which is currently experiencing the monsoon season.
Ryan's passion for golf is palpable, and I've had the privilege of playing with him several times; he's a formidable opponent when in form. The course will operate with preferred lies on the fairways for the next three days, which might prevent record-breaking scores but won't hinder low scores. The first round's tee times have been announced, with play commencing at 7:30 AM from both the first and tenth tees. I'll be starting at 9:30 AM from the first tee alongside Brazil's Adilson da Silva, a current season winner and the highest-ranked player in this week's field on the MCB Road to Mauritius.
As the host, my light-hearted goal is to avoid winning, though I secretly hope to contend in front of the Indian audience. This week also sees 16 amateurs, including local celebrities and sponsors, participating, enhancing the Legends Tour's focus on amateur engagement. It's particularly thrilling to see my 14-year-old son, Harjai, compete; he's part of the India Junior Development squad and is dedicated to the game. The amateurs will compete in a 36-hole individual event on Friday and Saturday.
The convenience of everyone staying on-site at Jaypee Greens fosters a social atmosphere, ideal for Legends Tour events. My family is here supporting me, crucial to my role as Tournament Host. I aim for all players to enjoy the warmth of Indian hospitality by week's end. Currently, my focus is on making birdies and avoiding bogeys. Wish me luck!
