Hyundai's Rolling Lab series, which began in 2012, initially focused on a mid-engined supercar concept that, regrettably, never made it to production. Despite multiple concept releases over the past decade, the automaker's high-performance N division shifted its focus to electric setups with the RN22e concept unveiled in 2022. Now, a new EV has emerged, though its definition as a vehicle is somewhat unconventional.

The RN24 is powered by the same dual-motor setup and battery pack found in the Ioniq 5 N. However, Hyundai's engineers stripped away the crossover's bulk, creating a bespoke chassis inspired by WRC. Despite a 13.3-inch (340-millimeter) shorter wheelbase, the N team managed to fit the entire 84-kWh battery by reorganizing the cells. The radical EV features an exoskeleton-style roll cage and minimal bodywork to further reduce weight.

Despite its stringent weight-saving measures, the concept weighs an estimated 4,144 pounds (1,880 kilograms). This is a reduction of about 772 lbs (350 kg) compared to the Ioniq 5 N. The 19-inch forged wheels in matte black, familiar from the Elantra N sports sedan, and the rear spoiler from Hyundai's TCR race cars are among the parts borrowed from other models. The Powertrain Drive Control Logic system from WRC allows drivers to adjust power delivery via steering wheel-mounted buttons, and settings for power balance between axles are also available.

The cooling system and e-handbrake are adaptations from the Ioniq 5 N, while the electronic motor torque control mirrors the i20 N Rally1's mechanical setup. A dedicated Rally Mode distributes torque to all four wheels, similar to the gas-fueled hot hatchback. The RN24 is designed for sideways performance but is also capable of reaching 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h). Despite being fully electric, the RN24 produces an artificial roar through side speakers and external speakers from the Ioniq 5 N, with the rear fenders acting as a soundbox.

While Hyundai has no plans to sell this stripped-down vehicle, the RN24 is more than just a test car. It is intended to spark discussions about next-generation high-performance EVs that will follow the Ioniq 5 N and the upcoming Ioniq 6 N sedan.
