The first-generation BMW M5 is undeniably one of the most iconic sedans ever produced. Introduced in the mid-1980s, it seamlessly blended elegant design with a luxurious interior and a high-performance straight-six engine that was a marvel to hear. Even after four decades, it continues to be a symbol of automotive excellence that many aspire to own.

The AutoTopNL YouTube channel recently had the opportunity to take an E28-generation M5 onto the unrestricted sections of the German Autobahn, providing us with a firsthand glimpse of how this legendary sedan performs at high speeds after all these years. As expected, the M5 effortlessly keeps up with—and often surpasses—modern traffic on the Autobahn. The driver managed to reach a GPS-indicated speed of 228 km/h (141 mph) before slowing down due to approaching traffic. It's worth noting that when the M5 was first introduced, it was one of the fastest cars in the world, boasting a top speed of 152 mph.

What's even more remarkable than its speed is the M5's distinctive sound. The 3.5-liter naturally aspirated straight-six engine revs up to 6,900 rpm, delivering a raspy, exhilarating sound with each gear change. In contrast to the numerous turbocharged engines of today, experiencing this engine's sound is nothing short of a spiritual journey, even when captured through a microphone.

In an era dominated by forced induction, hybrid technology, and substantial curb weights, it's highly unlikely that the M5 will ever revert to its pure, unadulterated form. All we can do is appreciate its legacy and continue to search for affordable E28 models in the classifieds.
