Self-identified independents made up a larger portion of voters in Tuesday's US presidential election than either Democrats or Republicans, according to Edison Research exit polling data. This marks the first time since Edison began conducting exit polls in 2004 that independents have surpassed the share of one of the two major US political parties. The independent share was recorded at 34 percent in the latest update of Edison's exit poll, tying with Republicans at 34 percent and exceeding Democrats at 32 percent.
