The Government of India has contributed a substantial amount of $1,169,746 towards the 'Hindi @ UN' project, aimed at increasing the presence of Hindi within the United Nations (UN). The Indian government has consistently worked to promote the use of Hindi at the UN. The 'Hindi @ UN' initiative, started in 2018 in partnership with the UN Department of Public Information, seeks to boost the UN's outreach in Hindi and raise awareness on international issues among the global Hindi-speaking community, according to a statement from India's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York. Since 2018, India has supported the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) by funding the translation and distribution of DGC's news and multimedia content in Hindi. The UN News in Hindi is now available on the UN's website and social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and a Facebook page dedicated to Hindi content. Additionally, a weekly audio bulletin in Hindi, known as UN Radio, is published and can be accessed via the UN Hindi News website and Soundcloud under 'UN News-Hindi'. Recently, Ambassador R Ravindra, Cd'A & DPR, presented a cheque of $1,169,746 to Ian Phillips, director and officer in-charge (news and media division) at the United Nations Department of Global Communications, to sustain this initiative. Last year, Ruchira Kamboj, India's then Permanent Representative to the UN, had also contributed towards enhancing the use of Hindi in the UN. The UN Hindi social media accounts boast a following of 50,000 on Twitter, 29,000 on Instagram, and 15,000 on Facebook, publishing around 1000 posts annually. The Hindi UN News website enjoys 1.3 million annual impressions and ranks among the top 10 on internet search engines.
