India seized control of the first Test against Bangladesh, extending their lead to 308 after fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah played a pivotal role in dismissing the visitors for 149 on Friday. The hosts ended day two in Chennai with 81-3 in their second innings. Shubman Gill, on 33, and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, on 12, were at the crease when play concluded. Taskin Ahmed removed skipper Rohit Sharma for five, while fellow pace bowler Nahid Rana had left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal caught behind for 10. Spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz trapped Virat Kohli lbw for 17, with Ultra Edge technology indicating a spike on the bat's inside edge, which Kohli himself did not notice.

Bangladesh were dismissed in the final session, with former skipper Shakib Al Hasan top-scoring on 32 in their reply to India's first-innings total of 376. The hosts opted not to enforce the follow-on, instead choosing to build on their lead of 227. Ravichandran Ashwin had set a challenging total with his 113, forming a marathon 199-run seventh-wicket stand with Ravindra Jadeja. India's bowlers dominated early in the second session, reducing Bangladesh to 40-5 after pace bowler Akash Deep's double strike on successive balls before lunch. Bumrah broke through first to dismiss Shadman Islam for two, followed by Deep bowling Zakir Hasan for three and rattling Mominul Haque's stumps for a duck.

Mushfiqur Rahim survived the hat-trick ball but managed just eight runs before becoming Bumrah's second wicket of the day. Shakib and wicketkeeper-batsman Litton Das added 51 runs, but Jadeja dismissed them both with his left-arm spin. Bumrah continued his aggressive bowling with bouncers and yorkers, supported by Mohammed Siraj, who helped clean up the Bangladesh tail, leaving Mehidy unbeaten on 27. Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud finished with figures of 5-83 after troubling the Indian batting on day one, before Ashwin and Jadeja led a fightback from the hosts. The pair resumed with India on 339-6 overnight, but pace bowler Taskin broke the stand early, with Jadeja caught behind without adding to his overnight score of 86. Taskin continued to strike, getting his third wicket with Ashwin caught by skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto.

The 38-year-old Ashwin received a standing ovation after his sixth Test ton, which included 10 fours and two sixes. Hasan wrapped up the innings with his second five-wicket haul in just his fourth Test. India aims to extend their lead at the top of the World Test Championship rankings as they embark on a fresh Test season of 10 matches. Bangladesh has never beaten India in a Test.
