On Sunday, India announced the successful testing of a domestically developed long-range hypersonic missile, achieving a crucial milestone in its military advancement. This accomplishment places India among a select group of nations, including China, Russia, and the United States, that possess this advanced technology. The global race for hypersonic weapons is a focal point for these countries, all of which are striving to enhance their long-range missile capabilities.
The Indian missile, jointly developed by the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation and industry partners, is designed to carry payloads over distances exceeding 1,500 km for the armed forces, according to a government statement. The statement further noted, "The flight data... confirmed the successful terminal maneuvers and impact with a high degree of accuracy." The test-firing occurred on Saturday from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the eastern coast of Odisha state.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the test as a "historic achievement" in a post on X, emphasizing that it positions India among the elite group of nations with such critical and advanced technologies.
