The Indian fashion industry is in mourning following the passing of renowned designer Rohit Bal. The 63-year-old, who had been battling a long-term illness, died on Friday. The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) shared the news on their official Instagram account, paying tribute to Bal's significant contributions to the fashion world.

Bal, affectionately known as 'Gudda' in the industry, was a pioneer whose work profoundly influenced Indian fashion. Born on May 8, 1961, in Srinagar to a Kashmiri Pandit family, Bal's journey in fashion began in the late 1980s. After completing his bachelor's degree in History from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, he pursued fashion studies at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). In 1990, he launched his independent collection, which quickly established him as one of India's most innovative designers.

Over the years, Bal's creations were showcased on runways worldwide and worn by global icons like Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell. He collaborated with Bollywood stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, and Sonam Kapoor. His designs were recognized internationally, and he received numerous awards, including 'Designer of the Year' at the Kingfisher Fashion Achievement Awards in 2001 and the Indian Fashion Awards in 2006.

In 2020, Bal was honored as the 'Iconic Fashion Designer of the Country' by the Rajnigandha Pearls India Fashion Awards. Despite a health scare, he returned to the runway in October this year, showcasing his collection 'Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe' at the Lakme Fashion Week grand finale, with Ananya Panday as the showstopper.

Bal's death signifies the end of an era in Indian fashion. His legacy extends beyond his designs, as he mentored and inspired many young designers. His ability to blend tradition with modernity will continue to influence future generations of designers. Bal was not just a designer but an artist whose work told stories and left a lasting impact on the fashion world.
