The Indiana Jones franchise commenced in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark, a film often considered the pinnacle of the series. Bethesda and MachineGames' forthcoming title, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, draws inspiration from each of the three original films. However, the latest extended gameplay video reveals a striking resemblance to Raiders of the Lost Ark. The similarities begin early, as Indy removes an idol from its pedestal, triggering a trap reminiscent of the opening scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. This incident might have taught Indy the importance of using a counterweight when exchanging idols, though his strategy still failed in Raiders. The tone of the game also mirrors Raiders, particularly the sequence set at Marshall College, Indy's sanctuary when not on relic-hunting expeditions. The game's protagonist, Gina, parallels Indy's first love, Marion Ravenwood, as her objectives do not always align with his. While Indy aims to thwart the Nazis from uncovering the Great Circle's secrets, Gina, an Italian journalist, seeks to find her missing sister. A global adventure is a staple in any Indiana Jones narrative, and the Great Circle delivers on this front. Indy's primary defense against Nazi guards is his fists or whatever is within reach. The video also hints at the puzzles Indy must solve and sequences that switch to third-person view as he navigates hidden tombs. This aligns with GameSpot's early hands-on experience, which highlighted stealth over combat. Notably, Indy will never harm a dog in the game, but Nazis are fair targets.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is set to launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC on December 9. A PlayStation 5 version will follow in Spring 2025.
