The wait has been agonizingly long for Indiana Jones fans, but finally, a brand-new video game in the franchise is on the horizon. Initially unveiled in 2021, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle is set to release later this year, allowing fans to slip into the iconic fedora of the intrepid archaeologist as he employs his intellect and whip to explore historical sites and thwart Nazis.

With the game's launch imminent, Microsoft and MachineGames have divulged more about its narrative and showcased some of its whip-wielding gameplay. While certain aspects remain as tightly guarded as the treasures in an Atlantean tomb, here's a comprehensive overview of what we know about Indiana Jones and The Great Circle so far.

Initially announced in 2021, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle is slated for release on December 9, 2024, a Monday. The game will debut on PS5 in 2025, specifically in April, according to reports. Similar to Microsoft's premier first-party titles, the new Indiana Jones game will be available on Game Pass from day one.

As more games transition away from last-gen systems, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle will be exclusive to Xbox Series X|S and PC upon launch, with PS5 availability following in 2025. Set between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, The Great Circle follows Jones on a globe-spanning adventure as he uncovers one of history's greatest enigmas. Set in 1937, Jones will confront Nazi adversaries intent on plundering the world's treasures for their own sinister ends. He won't be alone, as he'll reconnect with old comrades and forge alliances with new companions throughout his journey.

Regarding the enigmatic Great Circle, MachineGames remains tight-lipped. However, game director Jerk Gustafsson hinted at the circles' navigational significance and their connection to several historical sites. "Their connection has remained a mystery, making it the perfect backdrop for our game," Gustafsson noted.

Prepare for a digital odyssey as The Great Circle transports Indy from his academic haven at Marshall College in Connecticut to the hallowed corridors of the Vatican, the arid expanses of Egypt, the submerged temples of Sukhothai, and the icy summits of the Himalayas. These locales will challenge Indy with human foes and ancient traps, requiring him to solve puzzles and navigate perilous situations.

"We wanted to delve into Indy's psyche during this period, having just parted ways with Marion, feeling adrift and consumed by his work," Gustafsson added. Fans can anticipate an authentic experience, as MachineGames collaborated closely with Lucasfilm Games, drawing from an extensive archive of unseen Indiana Jones material to craft this epic adventure.

According to design director Jens Andersson, The Great Circle will predominantly feature first-person gameplay with occasional third-person segments. "Our game aims to immerse you in the role of an iconic hero," Andersson explained. "By primarily using first-person perspective, you can truly embody Indy, exploring and experiencing the world more intimately."

In classic Indiana Jones style, players will engage in fisticuffs, gunplay, and whip-wielding combat. Alternatively, a stealthier approach is possible, allowing players to evade conflict and remain in the shadows. Optional puzzles and environmental interactions will further enhance the gameplay experience.

Kurt Indovina observed in a hands-on preview, "Indiana Jones and The Great Circle seamlessly blends various genres while honoring the essence of Indiana Jones, the archaeology professor and adventurer."

A notable aspect of the game's development is MachineGames' close collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, ensuring an authentic entry in the franchise. This is evident in Indy's design and the game's environments, which evoke the original film trilogy. Lifelong Indiana Jones enthusiast and Bethesda creative director Todd Howard is also involved, periodically overseeing the game's development as an executive producer.

While Harrison Ford's visage has been digitally recreated for the in-game character model, including his signature facial scar, the legendary actor won't be voicing the character. Instead, Troy Baker will bring this iteration of Jones to life, as Ford had previously declared his retirement from the role after completing work on Dial of Destiny. Horror icon Tony Todd will also feature, lending his voice to a "mysterious giant" who pilfers an inconspicuous artifact from Indy's college.
