Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is now available on PC and Xbox, but could MachineGames or another studio develop a sequel or a new Indiana Jones game in the future? While it's too early to tell, Lucasfilm Games executive Douglas Reilly hinted at the possibility in an interview with Variety. Reilly mentioned that the team is "always looking for great stories," but stopped short of confirming any future projects involving MachineGames or other studios.
"Right now, we're focused on getting this one to the public and getting to the DLC and making this as successful as we can," Reilly said, referring to the game and its upcoming expansion, The Order of Giants. "I think we're always looking for great stories. And the good news is, there's a lot of space in between the films where we could tell more and more Indiana Jones stories that I think would be super interesting."
The Great Circle is a single-player adventure game set in 1937, between the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Players step into the shoes of the iconic Indiana Jones as they attempt to thwart evil forces seeking the power of The Great Circle. This marks the first console Indiana Jones game since Lego Indiana Jones 2 in 2011.
During the interview, Reilly also discussed how Lucasfilm collaborates with game developers. "We don't tell the teams how to run development. We don't tell them how to run their day-to-day of the business," he explained. For The Great Circle, Lucasfilm ensured the game captured the essence of Indiana Jones, including approving the casting of Troy Baker as the voice of Indiana Jones. Reilly praised Baker's performance, stating, "Between the work MachineGames did in representing him physically and the absolutely stunning work Troy has done voicing the character, you forget it's not Harrison when you play it. He's that good."
The future of another Indiana Jones game, whether from MachineGames or another studio, may hinge on the commercial success of The Great Circle. Microsoft rarely discloses sales figures, and the game's availability on Game Pass complicates tracking its performance. On Steam, The Great Circle has been a top seller and reached 12,000 concurrent players. However, it doesn't rank in the top 500 paid games on Xbox, though there are several reasons for this.
The Great Circle began development before Microsoft acquired MachineGames through its purchase of ZeniMax. Microsoft has acknowledged that making the game exclusive to Xbox at launch could result in millions in lost sales. The Great Circle is slated to release on PS5 in Spring 2025.
