Although Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones doesn't appear to have any pets during his globe-trotting adventures, the third film—Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade—revealed that Indy once had a beloved dog named Indiana. Indy's affection for dogs is one reason why he won't be harming any enemy canines in Bethesda and MachineGames' Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

During an interview with IGN, MachineGames Creative Director Jens Andersson confirmed that Indy's interactions with dogs owned by the villains won't mirror those in the developers' Wolfenstein games. Instead, Indy can deter the dogs by aiming his weapon at them, without actually firing. "[Indiana Jones] is a dog person," Andersson explained. "This is quite different from Wolfenstein, where the dog would explode... It's a family-friendly IP in many ways. How do we handle that? These are the kinds of decisions we make. We have dogs as enemies, but you don't really hurt them. You scare them away."

This is good news for the dogs, but potentially more challenging for Dr. Jones. As noted in GameSpot's early hands-on experience with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the game emphasizes stealth over outright action. The enemy dogs could pose another obstacle for Indy to remain undetected by Nazi soldiers. While he won't shoot the dogs, Indiana Jones has never hesitated to punch a Nazi in the face. In this game, Indy can also eliminate Nazis with stealth attacks and improvised weapons.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is set to release on Xbox Series X|S and PC on December 9. A PlayStation 5 version will follow in 2025.
