Hundreds of Indonesian expatriates convened at the embassy in Abu Dhabi to commemorate the 79th Indonesian Independence Day, displaying their vibrant cultural heritage through traditional garments. Despite the intense heat, community members participated in the flag-raising ceremony, orchestrated by a seven-member 'Paskibra' team, including four women. The 'Paskibra' is a dedicated group in Indonesia tasked with flag-raising ceremonies.
Husin Bagis, the Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE, emphasized the significant role of expatriates as national representatives. 'No matter where we are, we bear the esteemed name of Indonesia. Let us foster a positive image and stay united in our diversity,' he stated. The event was characterized by a lively ambiance, with participants wearing colorful traditional outfits from various Indonesian provinces. Ambassador Bagis donned a Betawinese 'Demang' with a songket sarong, while others exhibited traditional attire from Java, Betawi, Sumatra, and Sulawesi, many adorned with detailed batik designs.
A traditional 'tumpeng' dish, representing prosperity and thankfulness, was served during the festivities. The celebration also featured various games, competitions, and a children's fashion show, enhancing the joyful atmosphere.
Looking forward, Bagis expressed optimism for a strengthened bond between Indonesia and the UAE. According to the embassy, President Sheikh Mohamed is slated to visit Indonesia next month. Furthermore, Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto, who is also the president of Persilat (the International Federation of Pencak Silat), is expected to participate in the 20th World Pencak Silat Championship in Abu Dhabi in December.
