INEOS Britannia has emerged victorious in the Louis Vuitton Cup, defeating the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team from Italy in a closely contested race. This marks the first time Great Britain will compete for the America's Cup since 1964. The Cup is set to commence on 12 October, with INEOS Britannia facing off against the defending champions, Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.
INEOS Britannia entered the race with a two-win advantage over the Italians, leading 6:4. Today's race saw them finish approximately 300 metres ahead of Luna Rossa, securing their seventh point and the Cup. The team is led by Sir Ben Ainslie, a multiple Olympic medallist, who expressed his gratitude and pride in an interview with BOAT International.
"This is a monumental day for our team," Ainslie said. "I am incredibly proud of everyone involved, both on the water and those supporting us from shore in Barcelona and Brackley, UK. This victory is for all our fans and supporters who have stood by us." He also acknowledged the significant backing from Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, thanking everyone who has contributed to the team's success and British sailing.
Established in 1851, the America's Cup is the world's oldest international sporting competition, and Great Britain has yet to claim the title. BOAT International is currently in Barcelona, providing live coverage from the Barcelona Superyacht Regatta.
