Inside Out 2 has undeniably been a massive success. Released at a time when Pixar arguably needed a significant commercial triumph, the film not only achieved the studio's highest box office numbers but also became the highest-grossing animated film ever, raking in an impressive $1.69 billion worldwide.

The impact of such success on Pixar's future projects remains uncertain. Fans are understandably concerned that the studio's focus on sequels might overshadow the original works that initially established Pixar's reputation. The recent announcement of Incredibles 3 at D23, along with updates on Toy Story 5, has indeed sparked apprehension among Pixar enthusiasts about the studio's future direction.

However, Pixar is also developing several original projects, including Elio, Hoppers, and the serialized streaming show Win Or Lose. "We're constantly striving to maintain a balance," says Kelsey Mann, the director of Inside Out 2, in a recent interview with Empire. Mann points out that several ongoing projects at Pixar are not yet public knowledge, hinting that the studio's internal count of original versus sequel projects differs from what fans are aware of. "But we're always aiming to strike the right balance," he adds.

Mann emphasizes that both sequels and original films are held to the same rigorous internal standards at Pixar. "Whether it's a sequel or an original, the goal is always to create a great movie," he states. The possibility of an Inside Out 3 remains speculative, but the positive reception to the second film suggests there is a strong audience interest. "People are quite open to the idea of another film," Mann notes. "They want to ensure it's done right. But there's excitement about seeing Riley's life — her entire life. They want to witness Riley's growth."

As of now, Mann reveals that "we haven't had any discussions about it. Mainly because the movie just came out, and I took a break," he laughs. "But there are numerous great ideas we couldn't include in this film or the original. I sincerely hope those ideas find a place someday." Stay tuned for any future developments that might capture the essence of Riley's journey.
