In 2020, IO Interactive, the developer behind the Hitman series, announced Project 007, marking the first new James Bond video game for consoles since 007 Legends in 2012. Recently, IO Interactive has shared more about its grand vision for Bond, including the potential for a trilogy that would introduce a fresh origin story for the iconic spy.
IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak revealed to IGN that Project 007 will not be based on any existing Bond films. Instead, the studio has been granted the freedom to craft its own interpretation of James Bond for the game. "The most thrilling aspect of this project is that we are creating an original narrative," Abrak explained. "This isn't a game adaptation of a movie; it's a wholly new story, potentially the start of a major trilogy. What's equally significant and exciting is that this is a new Bond, one we've built from the ground up specifically for gamers. It's an exhilarating challenge to blend Bond's rich tradition with a fresh, young character that gamers can relate to and grow with."
Abrak refrained from providing specific release details but assured that "production is progressing remarkably well." He also expressed his aspiration to use Project 007 as a foundation for future Bond games. "I don't want to overstate it, but I hope this game will set a new standard for James Bond in the gaming world," Abrak added. "It's not just about one game; we aim to create a Bond universe that gamers can claim as their own, one that we can expand upon alongside the Bond films."
While Project 007 does not yet have a release date, it is known that Rodrigo Santoro, a veteran of Ubisoft, was brought on earlier this year as mission director. As for the next James Bond movie, there's a good chance that Project 007 might beat it to market.
