Ipswich defender Axel Tuanzebe is set to be sidelined for an extended period following a distressing accident that put his thumb at risk. Tuanzebe was absent from Ipswich's 4-1 loss to West Ham on Saturday due to an unspecified hand injury, which his manager, Kieran McKenna, disclosed had necessitated surgery.

Subsequent reports have revealed that the right-back sustained severe injuries in a domestic mishap while washing dishes. A shattered glass caused a deep laceration to his hand, raising concerns that his thumb might not be saved. However, prompt medical intervention and surgery have averted that dire outcome, though a swift return to play for the ex-Manchester United player seems improbable.

Speaking post the West Ham match, McKenna indicated that Tuanzebe would be "out for a while," implying he would definitely miss more than just the current international break. The 26-year-old had begun the season strongly, earning accolades from Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler after the recent goalless draw between the teams. Any prolonged absence would be a substantial setback for Ipswich, who have performed commendably in their first seven games but are yet to secure a win.

This injury also poses a challenge to Tuanzebe's emerging international career. He has earned his first three caps for the Democratic Republic of the Congo since June but had to withdraw from the recent Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches against Tanzania.
