On Tuesday, Iran carried out the execution of a man who was convicted by the courts for the murder of a policeman during the nationwide protests in 2022, according to the judiciary.

The judiciary's Mizan Online website reported that 'Gholamreza Rasaei was executed this morning (Tuesday) in Kermanshah prison' in western Iran for 'stabbing to death a police officer during the illegal protests in November 2022.' The 2022 protests were ignited by the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly violating Iran's strict dress code for women. Hundreds of people were killed, including dozens of security personnel, and thousands were arrested during what officials described as foreign-instigated 'riots.' Mizan stated that Rasaei was sentenced to death in October 2023 under Islamic Shariah law for 'retribution,' and the verdict was subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court. His execution marks the 10th instance of individuals being executed on charges of murder or other acts of violence against security force personnel during the protests.

Covering the neck and head has been mandatory for women in Iran since a few years following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Following the protests, women increasingly disregarded the dress code, but in recent months, police have intensified measures against women who flout the rules.
