Tehran has vowed to 'use all available tools' to retaliate against Israel's weekend attack on military targets within Iran, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei on Monday. Iran initially downplayed the Israeli air attack on Saturday, stating it caused only minimal damage. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden urged a halt to the escalation, which has sparked concerns of a full-scale conflict in the Middle East.
During a weekly televised news conference, Baghaei declared: '(Iran) will employ all available tools to deliver a definitive and effective response to the Zionist regime (Israel).' He further noted that the nature of Iran's response will be contingent on the nature of the Israeli attack, without providing further details.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated on Sunday that Iranian officials should decide the best way to demonstrate Iran's strength to Israel. He emphasized that the Israeli attack should 'neither be downplayed nor exaggerated.'
Israel's military reported that scores of Israeli jets conducted three waves of strikes before dawn on Saturday, targeting missile factories and other sites near Tehran and in western Iran. The two heavily armed adversaries have been engaged in a series of retaliatory actions against each other for months. Saturday's strike followed an Iranian missile barrage on October 1, much of which Israel claimed was intercepted by its air defenses.
Iran supports Hezbollah, which is currently involved in intense fighting with Israeli forces in Lebanon, as well as the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which is battling Israel in the Gaza Strip.
