Iraq has lodged a formal complaint with the United Nations regarding Israel's utilization of its airspace to conduct strikes against Iran on Saturday, as disclosed by an Iraqi government spokesperson on Monday.
Israel had previously asserted that it targeted military installations in Iran in response to Tehran's assaults on Israel earlier this month, marking the most recent episode in the ongoing conflict between the two heavily armed adversaries.
Iran reported that its air defense systems effectively repelled Israel's attacks on military targets in the provinces of Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam, resulting in 'limited damage' to certain locations. Iranian media documented multiple explosions spanning several hours in the capital and at nearby military bases, commencing shortly after 2am (2230 GMT on Friday).
On the day of the attack, both Iran and Iraq temporarily suspended flights but later reopened their airspaces and resumed operations.
In spite of calls for de-escalation following the Israeli strike, the chief commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards has cautioned Israel that it will confront 'bitter consequences' as a result of its assault on Iranian military sites, according to local media reports on Monday.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei emphasized that officials should strategize the most effective way to showcase Iran's strength to Israel in the aftermath of the Israeli attack. 'The evil perpetrated by (Israel) two nights ago should neither be trivialized nor overstated,' he added.
Khamenei further asserted that Iran's power should be demonstrated to Israel, noting that the method to achieve this should be 'determined by the officials and that which is in the best interest of the people and the country should take place.'
