On Monday, Iraq executed 10 militants who had been sentenced to death on terrorism charges, according to security sources. The executions took place at a prison in the southern city of Nassiriya, and all those executed were Iraqi nationals, the sources confirmed. These men were found guilty of joining the Islamic State militant group and committing 'serious terrorist crimes,' the sources added. In April, Iraq executed 11 militants on similar charges, which drew criticism from Amnesty International, who expressed concern over the lack of transparency in Iraq's execution practices in recent months, suggesting that more secret executions might have occurred. Since defeating Islamic State fighters in a US-backed military campaign from 2014 to 2017, Iraq has tried hundreds of suspected jihadists and conducted several mass executions.
