A coalition of pro-Iranian armed groups in Iraq claimed responsibility for a drone attack against Israel on Sunday. The Israeli military reported intercepting 'multiple suspicious aerial targets' originating from Iraq overnight. 'The fighters of the Islamic Resistance of Iraq targeted on Sunday morning a strategic location in the occupied territories using drones,' the Iraqi coalition stated on Telegram, referring to Israel and adding that the operation was conducted 'in support of our people in Gaza.' The Israeli military confirmed that the attack resulted in no injuries. This incident occurred amid escalating regional tensions nearly a year into the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip, which has involved Iran-backed armed groups across the Middle East. In a related development, the Tehran-backed Hezbollah movement in Lebanon announced on Sunday that it had launched rockets at Israeli military industry sites 'in an initial response' to attacks attributed to Israel that caused pagers and two-way radios used by the group to explode across Lebanon earlier this week. The Islamic Resistance of Iraq, an alliance of Iran-backed groups, has claimed several drone attacks targeting Israel in recent months, all of which were intercepted by the Israeli military. Last winter, the Islamic Resistance of Iraq also claimed over 175 rocket and drone attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria. U.S. forces responded with multiple retaliatory strikes against these militant factions in both countries. The attacks on American troops have significantly decreased in the past few months.
