Israel's security cabinet on Tuesday green-lighted a US-brokered ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah to bring an end to the conflict in Lebanon, according to CNN.
The landmark decision mandates a 60-day halt in hostilities, during which both the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah militants are to withdraw from southern Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his support for the ceasefire in a televised address, stating that he will now present the agreement to the full cabinet in Jerusalem.
Netanyahu highlighted that the accord was reached after Israel had significantly weakened Hezbollah's leadership, ranks, infrastructure, and concealed bunkers along the border. The deal stipulates the formation of a five-nation monitoring committee, led by the US, to oversee the de-escalation process. This committee will facilitate the return of hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals in both Israel and Lebanon, who have endured over a year of daily missile assaults.
Additionally, the ceasefire agreement ensures Israel's military presence near the border and the right to respond to any future Hezbollah attacks. It also mandates the Lebanese army to actively remove the terrorist group from the border area as Hezbollah relocates north of the Litani River, thereby diminishing its ability to launch daily attacks on Israel.
