At least 55 Palestinians lost their lives and numerous others were injured in an Israeli attack on a residential building in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya on Tuesday, according to the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service.
The service also stated that many victims were likely still buried beneath the debris. The official Palestinian news agency, WAFA, and Hamas media had previously reported the same number of casualties.
WAFA reported that a significant number of those killed in the strike were women and children, citing medical personnel. There was no immediate comment from Israeli authorities.
On Monday, the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service announced that approximately 100,000 people were trapped in Jabalia, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanoun without access to medical care or food supplies. The service reported that its operations had ceased due to the three-week Israeli offensive in northern Gaza, where Israel claimed to have eliminated Hamas combat forces earlier in the year-long conflict.
Israel asserted that the raid was intended to prevent Hamas from reorganizing.
