The number of fatalities resulting from Israel's early morning attacks on military bases in Iran on Saturday has increased to four, according to the Iranian army.
"Two additional soldiers... have passed away due to their injuries," reported the official IRNA news agency, referencing an army statement. Israel launched strikes on military sites in Iran early Saturday, claiming it was in response to Tehran's previous attacks this month. Iranian media documented multiple explosions lasting several hours in the capital and at nearby military bases, beginning shortly after 2am (2230 GMT on Friday).
Earlier, the Iranian army confirmed that two soldiers were killed in the Israeli air strikes on military installations, as stated by a report on state television. "The army of the Islamic Republic of Iran lost two of its fighters during the night when they faced projectiles from the criminal Zionist regime in defense of its territory," the statement read.
Subsequently, the Israeli military announced that it had concluded its "targeted" attacks against military targets in Iran, affirming that its planes had returned safely. Meanwhile, Iran declared that it was compelled to defend itself after Israeli retaliatory strikes targeted military installations and resulted in the deaths of its soldiers on Saturday.
"Iran holds the right and the obligation to protect itself against external acts of aggression," the foreign ministry stated in a release, citing Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
