Creators and consumers are grappling with the integration of generative AI in various fields, from games to TV-show opening sequences, and public sentiment towards AI appears to be evolving. To assist consumers in making informed decisions about which games to purchase, game storefront Itch.io has mandated that all creators must disclose the use of generative AI in their games, as announced by Itch.io founder Leaf Corcoran in a forum post on the site.
The post itself is quite direct, primarily addressing the creators who will be required to provide this information. "We've introduced a new field on project edit pages called 'Generative AI disclosure.' This field inquires whether your project includes results from generative AI. If you answer yes, we also ask about the types of generative AI utilized, such as Graphics, Sound, Text & Dialog, and Code," Corcoran wrote. Selecting Yes will append an "AI Generated" tag to your project, while selecting No will result in a "No AI" tag.
Crucially, Corcoran emphasizes that "Assets composed of generative AI (even if subsequently modified) that are not tagged will no longer be indexed on [Itch.io's] browse pages." The project will not be removed but will not appear when browsing and must be found through search or a direct link.
Corcoran refrains from making any moral judgment regarding the use of AI, and Itch.io's Content Creator Quality Guidelines explicitly state that "we are strictly enforcing disclosure for all game asset pages due to the legal ambiguity surrounding rights associated with Generative AI content." As Itch.io implements this measure, numerous game developers and publishers are also clarifying their positions on the technology, including Remedy, Microsoft, Netflix, and others.
