James Van Der Beek has expressed his regret to his close ones for not informing them beforehand about his colorectal cancer diagnosis. The 47-year-old actor, known for his role in “Dawson’s Creek,” shared on Instagram that he had not planned to disclose his health condition through a brief statement to People magazine. However, he had to change his strategy when he learned that a tabloid was about to leak the news.

“There’s no playbook for how to announce these things, but I’d planned on talking about it at length with People magazine at some point soon… to raise awareness and tell my story on my own terms,” Van Der Beek explained. “But that plan had to be altered early this morning when I was informed that a tabloid was going to run with the news,” he added.

The father of six mentioned that he had been managing the diagnosis privately and undergoing treatment while focusing more intently on his overall health. “I’m in a good place and feeling strong,” he assured his followers. “It’s been quite the initiation, and I’ll tell you more when I’m ready.”

Van Der Beek also apologized to those in his life whom he had intended to inform personally. “Nothing about this process has occurred on my preferred timeline… But we roll with it, taking each surprise as a signpost, pointing us toward a greater destiny than we would have discovered without divine intervention,” he said. He further expressed his and his family’s deep appreciation for the love and support they have received.

In his Instagram post, Van Der Beek included a video montage of him with his children. He and his wife Kimberly, 42, share six children: Olivia, 14, Joshua, 12, Annabel, 10, Emilia, 8, Gwendolyn, 6, and Jeremiah, 3. The actor revealed that he has been battling colorectal cancer privately with the support of his “incredible family.” “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good,” Van Der Beek stated.

Kimberly showed her support by commenting on her husband’s Instagram post, writing, “I love you baby.” She also shared a post about Northern cardinals, calling them “romantic” and explaining their lifelong bond, which includes traveling together, singing before nesting, and feeding each other during courtship.

Van Der Beek and his wife have been married since 2010. The couple and their children currently reside in Texas, having moved from Los Angeles in 2020.
