Jamie Foxx is back! In his latest Netflix comedy special, “What Had Happened Was …,” the 56-year-old Oscar winner shared shocking details about his headline-grabbing health scare in 2023. Foxx disclosed that he suffered a “brain bleed that led to a stroke.”
Recalling the fateful day, Foxx said, “April 11, I was having a bad headache, and I asked my boy for an Aspirin. I realized quickly that when you’re in a medical emergency, your boys don’t know what the f–k to do.” He added, “Before I could get the Aspirin [clicks his fingers] I went out. I don’t remember 20 days.”
Foxx explained that his friends took him to a doctor in Atlanta, where he was given a cortisone shot and sent home. “What the f–k is that?” he questioned. “I don’t know if you can do Yelps for doctors, but that’s half a star.”
His sister, Deidra Dixon, remained concerned and brought him to Piedmont Hospital, near where he was filming the Netflix special. There, a doctor delivered the “horrible news” that Foxx was “having a brain bleed that has led to a stroke” and would die if he didn’t undergo immediate surgery.
Foxx described the experience as “kind of oddly peaceful” while unconscious. “I saw the tunnel. I didn’t see the light,” he said, joking, “It was hot in that tunnel. Shit, am I going to the wrong place in this motherf—er? Because I looked at the end of the tunnel, and I thought I saw the Devil like, ‘C’mon.’ Or is that Puffy [Sean Combs]?”
After surgery, doctors informed Foxx’s sister that he “may be able to make a full recovery, but it’s going to be the worst year of his life.” Foxx confirmed, “That’s what it was.”
On May 4, 2023, Foxx woke up to find himself in a wheelchair, which he struggled to comprehend. He admitted, “I couldn’t wipe my own ass,” and refused to be bathed by the nurses during his recovery.
“What Had Happened Was …” was filmed in October during a three-show stint in Atlanta, the same city where he was hospitalized last year. After the shows, two attendees claimed Foxx accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of being responsible for his hospitalization, even calling the FBI on the mogul. However, one attendee clarified that Foxx denied Diddy’s involvement, stating, “He was not responsible. If he was, I would’ve been dead.”
Combs was arrested in September on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. Foxx had previously shared only a few details about his “medical complication” before his comedy special. In a July 2023 Instagram video, he said, “Some people said I was blind. But as you can see, the eyes are working. The eyes are working just fine. I’m not paralyzed. But I went to hell and back, and my road to recovery had some potholes as well. But I’m coming back, and I’m able to work.”
During an awards celebration last year, Foxx reportedly revealed that he “couldn’t actually walk” without assistance six months prior. Earlier this year, in Phoenix, he told a group of people, “Look, April 11 last year, bad headache, asked my boy for an Advil. I was gone for 20 days.”
On Monday, Foxx earned a Golden Globe nomination for his new comedy special. He also has another Netflix project on the horizon, “Back in Action,” an action comedy co-starring Cameron Diaz as suburban spies. The movie is set to release early next year. Foxx was filming the movie when his health scare occurred. “What Had Happened Was …” is now available to stream on Netflix.
