Japan is celebrated as a distinctive destination, harmoniously combining tradition, innovation, natural beauty, and rich cultural experiences, according to Ken Okaniwa, Ambassador of Japan to the UAE. He emphasized the essence of Japanese hospitality, known as ‘Omotenashi,’ which ensures all visitors feel warmly welcomed and cared for. Additionally, Japan is globally recognized for its low crime rates, pristine streets, and top-notch public facilities.

‘I recommend experiencing Japan’s public transportation, which is highly efficient and comfortable, except during rush hours,’ Okaniwa told Khaleej Times. He also noted that the Dubai Metro, operated by a consortium including Japanese companies, reflects Japan’s expertise in this area. The bilateral exchange between Japan and the UAE has grown significantly in recent years, partly due to the 2022 visa exemption for UAE passport holders, which Okaniwa hopes will further strengthen the friendship between the two nations.

Japan and the UAE have maintained excellent relations since before the UAE’s foundation, evolving from an initial focus on oil development to broader areas of cooperation. The ambassador highlighted the strong bond of friendship between the two peoples, with increasing numbers of visitors to each country. Economic relations, particularly in the oil sector, have been pivotal, with the UAE supplying approximately 41% of Japan’s crude oil imports in 2023, while Japan remains the largest destination for UAE oil exports.

Looking ahead, Japan and the UAE are collaborating on major projects, including a mega-project in Ruwais involving a Japanese company to produce LNG and low-carbon ammonia, contributing to carbon emission reduction. Both countries are also fostering startups through initiatives like JU-CAT, with Gitex attracting Japanese startups to the UAE. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI), established in 2022, has further solidified bilateral relations, with ongoing negotiations for an Economic Partnership Agreement.

Space cooperation is another growing area, with Japan supporting the UAE’s Hope Probe to Mars and plans for the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt using Japan’s H3 rocket. Education remains a priority, with the Japanese School in Abu Dhabi offering Emirati students the opportunity to study in Japanese, fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

Japanese cuisine, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, is gaining popularity in the UAE. The number of Japanese restaurants in the country has tripled since 2013, and the Japanese government is actively promoting food exports, with events showcasing Japanese produce held in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The upcoming Osaka Expo 2025, themed ‘Designing Future Society for Our Lives,’ aims to bring nations together to address global challenges, offering another opportunity to strengthen Japan-UAE ties.
