Japan achieved a consecutive monthly record for visitor numbers in July, according to official figures released on Friday. The surge in tourism was fueled by the weak yen and the summer holiday season. The total number of foreign visitors, including both business and leisure travelers, reached 3.29 million, marking a new monthly high and surpassing the previous record of 3.14 million set in June, as reported by the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO). The JNTO noted that school holidays in East Asia and Europe significantly boosted visitor numbers from these regions. With over 21 million visitors having arrived in Japan by July, the country is on track to exceed the annual record of 31.9 million visitors set in 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite a recent strengthening of the yen, it reached a 38-year low against the dollar last month, making Japan an attractive destination. Among the 23 markets monitored by the JNTO, travelers from 19 regions set new records for arrivals in July.
