Jay Leno didn't look his best at the Comedy for Koby event in Beverly Hills on Monday night. The 74-year-old comedian arrived with a black eye, a swollen face, and a bandaged wrist. Sporting an eye patch, Leno told TMZ he was "holding up fine" before detailing how he sustained his injuries. "I was staying at a hotel on a hill," he recounted. "I asked where a good place to eat was, and they said, 'At the bottom.' The restaurant was there, but I didn't have a car, so I had to walk about a mile and a half around."
"I thought the hill didn't look that steep, about 60, 70 feet. I decided to try going down," Leno continued, explaining that he "fell down" the hill, hitting his head on a rock and injuring his eye. Despite the accident, the former "Tonight Show" host performed a comedy show before heading to the hospital in Los Angeles for treatment. He noted that the fall happened "only a couple of hours" before his show.
"It's not that big a deal. It's alright," Leno added. Reflecting on the incident, he shared, "The great thing about this age is you don't learn by your mistakes. You keep doing the same stupid thing." Leno is no stranger to serious injuries. In Nov. 2022, he suffered third-degree burns on his face from a garage accident, requiring multiple skin grafts. Just two months later, he broke multiple bones in a motorcycle accident. Despite these setbacks, Leno joked about both incidents in his comedy shows after recovery.
The Emmy Award winner has also been dealing with his wife Mavis' dementia battle. In April, he was granted conservatorship over Mavis, 78. The couple, married since 1980, met at the Comedy Store in the '70s. "We have a lot of fun," Leno said about his wife in an interview earlier this year. "People say marriage is difficult, but I don't get it. I enjoy her company. I enjoy taking care of her. We have fun. She's the most independent woman I ever knew. I just couldn't be prouder of her."
