Jim Carrey’s sister, Rita, has passed away, as confirmed by her husband of 16 years, Alex. Alex shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook on Friday, revealing that Rita, a radio personality, had died on Thursday.
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I share the news of Rita’s peaceful and quiet passing on November 14, 2024, surrounded by her family and friends,” Alex wrote in his message. He went on to express his deep affection for their relationship, stating, “Rita and I have been together for 16 years, and we finally got married last year in July, in an outdoor wedding that she had always dreamed of. We traveled the world together and made many friends along the way. Rita was not just my wife but also my best friend and lover.”
Alex also highlighted Rita’s compassionate nature, mentioning, “Rita had a loving soul and always wanted to help others, even complete strangers. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she even started a fundraiser to support a local charity.” He invited family and friends to a candlelight vigil in Rita’s memory on December 7, 2024, at Heathcote Terrace in St. Catharines.
Following the vigil, attendees were encouraged to participate in the Christmas on the Terrace public event in support of Gillian’s Place. Donations in Rita’s memory could be made directly to Gillian’s Place or at the event, with non-perishable food, children’s clothing, toiletries, or unwrapped children’s presents being particularly appreciated.
Reflecting on their time together, Alex wrote, “It’s been a wonderful and crazy journey with Rita. She brought joy to everyone she met, and I will always cherish the memory of this beautiful and talented woman. Goodbye, my lover. Goodbye, my friend. Until we meet again. You truly lived the Time of your life.” He signed off with, “Your bestest friend and husband, Alex.”
Rita was born in Canada to parents Kathleen and Percy Carrey. She was one of four children, including Jim, John, and Patricia. Rita had a successful career as a radio host and public speaker, and she also performed in a classic rock band.
