Chilean professional golfer Joaquin Niemann, captain of the HSBC CMB 2 Team, led his squad to victory in the Wednesday Pro-Am of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship held at Yas Links Abu Dhabi. The team, which included Richard Van Der Meer, Manoj Khatod, and Haran Wats, shot an impressive 18-hole score of 43 under par, securing the top spot.
Niemann, aged 25, and his team showcased exceptional performance, with nines of 21 and 22 under par, starting from Hole 10 in the two-tee start format. Thriston Lawrence and his ADSC Abu Dhabi 360 Team finished just one point behind the winners, highlighting a competitive field.
The event saw eleven teams finish 30 under par or better, despite the unseasonably warm weather and a modest breeze. The format, Tour Scramble, involved all players teeing off, selecting the best ball, and playing from that spot with their own ball until holed. The professional always played his own ball throughout the round.
Niemann's short game coach, Peter Cowen, noted that the golfer is in good form and 'is one to watch this week,' having walked nine holes with him during the Pro-Am. The field comprised 25 teams, each led by a professional golfer and accompanied by three amateurs. Professionals played from the Championship Tees, while men amateurs and ladies played from their respective tees.
Final results (Under Par): Team Niemann (Chile), HSBC – CMB 2, -43; Team Lawrence (RSA), ADSC Abu Dhabi 360 Team, -42; Team Hidalgo (Spain), ADSC EGF, -39; Team Siem (Ger), HSBC – GPB 2, -35; Manassero (IT), ADSC 1, -34; Wallace (Eng), HSBC – CMB 3, -34; McKibbin (NI), HSBC – GBM 3, -34.
