Joe El-Abd, the ex-Bristol and Toulon flanker, has been confirmed as the new England defence coach, replacing Felix Jones. The Rugby Football Union made the announcement, noting El-Abd’s appointment after Jones’ unexpected resignation in August. At 44, El-Abd will oversee the autumn Tests and Six Nations this season while continuing his role as rugby director at Oyonnax. He plans to transition to full-time with England after his duties at the French second division club.

“I am thrilled to welcome someone of Joe’s caliber to our coaching program,” said England head coach Steve Borthwick. “His extensive knowledge, passion for rugby, and proven track record in building high-performing teams will be vital for the squad’s growth. Joe embodies the values we cherish in the England Rugby team, and I am confident he will enhance our environment and swiftly contribute to our game’s continuous improvement.”

El-Abd initially joined Oyonnax as a player-coach and returned as director of rugby in 2019, following four years as forwards and defence coach at French Top 14 club Castres. “I am deeply honored to join the England coaching team and am eager to begin,” he stated. “I am enthusiastic about the direction this England team is taking under Steve’s guidance. His energy is contagious, and his vision for the team is evident. Defence is a critical aspect of the game, and I am passionate about it. I look forward to developing a defence strategy that will propel England’s success.”

England’s autumn campaign commences against New Zealand at Allianz Stadium on November 2, followed by matches against Australia, South Africa, and Japan.
