John Stamos has responded to critics who found his decision to wear a bald cap in support of his 'Full House' co-star Dave Coulier, following Coulier's cancer diagnosis, to be 'embarrassing.' Coulier recently confirmed that he is undergoing chemotherapy for his 'very aggressive' stage 3 cancer. Stamos's attempt to show solidarity by wearing a bald cap in a photo with Coulier, who had lost his hair due to chemotherapy, quickly drew negative reactions.
'I'm so shocked. It's just embarrassing,' Stamos told TMZ about the backlash. 'What they should be doing instead of making silly little videos or doing comments, they should call their doctor, make an appointment — like that's the whole point of this,' he added, emphasizing Coulier's message.
'I'm embarrassed for people that they waste time on this. All I was doing was cheering up a friend,' Stamos, 61, said. The duo, who have been friends since the 1980s, had an 'incredible' time together after news of Coulier's health struggles emerged.
Coulier announced his diagnosis of stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma on November 13. He is undergoing six rounds of chemotherapy and is expected to complete his treatment in February 2025. Coulier discovered his condition five weeks ago after experiencing a severe cold and noticing swelling in his groin area.
One week after Coulier's announcement, Stamos posted an Instagram photo wearing a bald cap next to Coulier, whose head was shaved. Stamos explained that he donned the bald cap and used Photoshop to demonstrate 'solidarity' with his friend. 'Nothing like throwing on a bald cap and flexing some Photoshop skills to show some love and solidarity with my bro @dcoulier,' he captioned the series of photos.
Despite the initial criticism, Coulier defended Stamos, stating that the gesture was part of how they were coping with a difficult situation. Their friendship began decades ago when they played Uncle Jesse and Uncle Joey, respectively, on 'Full House.' Stamos was one of the first to publicly support Coulier on social media after his diagnosis.
