Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi is set to visit Iran on Sunday for a rare meeting to discuss regional developments with his Iranian counterpart, according to Iranian state media. This visit comes after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Regional tensions have escalated following Haniyeh's assassination on Wednesday, which occurred just a day after an Israeli strike in Beirut that killed Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander from the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah. Both Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of orchestrating Haniyeh's assassination and have vowed to retaliate. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in the incident.
Safadi's trip to Iran follows ongoing diplomatic efforts by the United States and its allies, including France, Britain, Italy, and Egypt, aimed at preventing further regional escalation. Iran and Jordan are working to enhance their relations, despite recent tensions stemming from Amman's accusations that pro-Iranian militias in Syria were involved in smuggling narcotics into the country and participating in the interception of Iran's first direct attack on Israel last April.
