Josh Brolin recently shared a distressing childhood memory involving his father, James Brolin, on Graham Bensinger’s “In Depth” podcast. The 56-year-old actor recounted a disturbing incident where his father, now 84, made him eat his pet pig for dinner.

“Did he tell you the pig story? What a f—ing dick,” Josh exclaimed after discovering that his father had shared the story with Bensinger. He described how he had raised the pigs, named Oink and Snort, only to find them on the dinner table one night. “He said, ‘Guess what you’re eating.’ I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘Either Oink or Snort.’ I was like, ‘What?’ He went, ‘Yeah, that’s what we’re eating. That’s who we slaughtered,'” Josh recalled, expressing his bewilderment at his father’s decision to reveal this to him.

Josh speculated that his father might have been seeking to make an impact, possibly due to feeling a lack of influence in other areas. “When you feel like you don’t have an impact, that’s when you start to look for any impact, whether it’s a negative impact or not,” he said, adding that he could never imagine doing something similar with his own children.

Despite the incident, Josh acknowledged that his father is a complex individual, known for his friendliness but also for having boundaries. “My dad’s an interesting guy — not to reveal too much — in that he’s super friendly, but there’s a stop sign,” Josh explained, contrasting his own openness with his father’s approach.

Josh, the son of James and wildlife activist Jane Cameron Agee, has four children of his own. His father, James, who has two other children, has reflected on his own fatherhood, admitting that being away often made it challenging to feel like a great father. However, he has also acknowledged that Josh is an exemplary father, from whom he has learned valuable lessons.
