Disgraced actor Jussie Smollett has had his conviction for lying about a fabricated racist and homophobic attack in downtown Chicago overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court on a technicality.
The court determined that the former 'Empire' actor's rights were violated by a special prosecutor's decision to retry him after the initial charges were previously dismissed. Smollett, who identifies as both black and gay, had alleged that two men wearing MAGA hats assaulted him, hurling homophobic and racial epithets while placing a noose around his neck. This led to a widespread search for suspects by the Chicago police.
The purported attack garnered extensive national media attention before a Chicago police investigation exposed it as a hoax. With contributions from Post wires.
