US Vice-President Kamala Harris stated on Saturday that the elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was a key figure in the attack that sparked the conflict in the Gaza Strip, presents a chance for a ceasefire in the Middle East. "This situation offers an opportunity that we should fully seize to focus on ending this war and securing the release of the hostages," Harris informed reporters. "When it comes to the challenges in the Middle East, particularly in that area, they have always been complex. However, this does not imply we should abandon our efforts. The path will always be difficult." The Palestinian militant group Hamas confirmed on Friday that its leader, Yahya Sinwar, had been killed by the Israeli military in Gaza, a day after Israel announced his death. "We grieve for the great leader, the martyred brother, Yahya Sinwar, Abu Ibrahim," said Khalil al-Hayya, a Hamas official based in Qatar, in a video statement broadcast by Al Jazeera. According to video released by Israel's military on Thursday, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was tracked by an Israeli mini drone as he lay dying in the debris of a building in southern Gaza. As the drone hovered close by, the video depicted him throwing a stick at it, seemingly in a final act of defiance.
